Graduation rolled around faster than we could have anticipated. Time flies when you’re covering up a multiple murder. There were rumors, of course. But no one blabbed to anyone that mattered. To no one’s surprise, three varsity athletes going missing the night of prom was a big deal. But between our cunning and the police’s ineptitude, it seemed we had pulled it off. I had let Danny get his fill, and then we staged the bodies in Judd’s muscle car and sent it flying off a cliff down into the lake. No one was wearing seatbelts, of course. The windows were open. There were beer cans and plastic vodka bottles. Water does awful things to bodies. Catfish, gar, and snapping turtles are known to eat just about anything that will fit in their mouths. The authorities surely found human teeth marks on some of their bones, but if they had, we never heard about it.

The last day of our school year was set aside for grieving. I wore a white shirt and black tie to school. Danny was furious. He hated me in general those days. When he came to, caked in viscera and dirt, he wanted to do the right thing, call the police, an ambulance. Maybe one of them could make it out alive. But cooler heads, namely mine, prevailed. He sobbed and wretched as we did our dirty work. I didn’t want to tell him, but in the moonlight, his stomach full, he was practically radiant. The healthiest I had seen him look in ages.

I still think of that night sometimes. Not really the blood and guts. The aftermath. Maybe the closest we had ever been or ever would be. The closest I’d be to another human for the rest of my life. Maybe being accomplices is more intimate than being in a relationship. I really wouldn’t know.

Once we had done the deed, we stripped out of our suits and stuffed them into bags that had amassed in my mom’s floorboards. By this point, he was well and truly checked out. That was fine. He had done all the hard work, so now it was time for me to pull my weight too. I would be alert and think of all the stupid little things murderers often forget.

I put a towel down across the backseat for Danny to lay on. I drove us back to my house. We rode with the windows down, the cool air washing over our naked bodies. I reached back and Danny took hold of my hand. The blood was cold and sticky now, sealing our fingers together. I reassured him that everything was going to be okay.

When we got to my house, I drove the van past the end of the driveway, out to the treeline. We made a fire and burned all of our clothes. I watched him watching the fire, the flames dancing in his eyes. Among the trees, fireflies glowed green in the darkness. Or maybe it was my bee friends.
